What happened to my Gerbera?
| | |

My little pink gerbera daisy was doing beautifully for weeks! All of a sudden (practically overnight) all of the leaves are brown and shriveled, flowers drooping and the whole thing looks dead. I might have accidentally pulled up a few roots a couple of days ago, but most of the plant is still in the ground. It has been very hot and sunny here lately, could that have something to do with it? I've been trying to give it lots of water.... Please help!

Well, were do you have gerber daisy? In a pot with great drainage you can water them lots and they'll be ok. In the ground with insufficient drainage or moisture retentive soil and you could be drowning the little fella.

Powdery mildew is likely the cause. Many of the gerbers at the store have been slowly dying from too much humidity and water. Seems we can't get people to not water things that are already wet. Poor drainage kills them faster than drought.

Is yours in full sun? Mine are in shade until evening and I still have to water them almost every day. If I forget, I'll find them face down, looking like they've been ironed to the ground--though their leaves don't turn brown that quickly. Watering at that point will cause them to revive within a short time.
