| I'm pretty sure these are from seed I sowed last fall, but they don't look like anything I was expecting:
The tall, thin ones:

I'm guessing Liatris, but I'm probably wrong.

I think it might be *too* frilly to be liatris... it looks like Cosmos to me, which I think is an easy re-seeder.

I'll be pleased if they are liatrus, but these don't have the clump of basal leaves I see in photos of it. I know I didn't intentionally buy any liatrus seed, though they could have been mis-labeled. I did throw some cosmos seeds around, but these don't look like any that I've grown before. Guess I'll have to be patient till they bloom. They look too nice to be weeds. Thanks, alisande & janetgia.

They look just like my Standing Cypress (Ipomopsis rubra). They are listed as a biennial but grown as an annual. I planted some seeds years ago and they come back every year, beautiful orange/red flowers that attract hummingbirds.

I think that might be it, reginaz. I don't recall seeing them last year, so it will be another year till they bloom. Can't wait! Photos of them look gorgeous.

If the plants are more delicate than liatris, they could be butter and eggs (a weed/wildflower with all sorts of other common names, too).

They look like tall asters of some sort. They grow wild here and I have lots of them. They bloom in late summer and through early fall. They spread from roots and seeds that can blow in the breeze from other areas. They can be invasive in moist soil. Covered in beautiful little star-like flowers in either blues, pinks, whites or lilac colors. That is what I would say they are - Asters. However, there is another WEED that looks much like that. Has minimal flowers and isn't worth keeping. If they are those, PULL THEM OUT! Check out the link below. I have all of these asters growing on my property and in my garden. ~Annie

I am keeping a close eye on these in case they turn out to be weedy. That butter and eggs sure is pretty, but apparently also invasive. Thanks for the warnings xantippe & Annie.
