D'oh - black walnut.

You know, I know better, I really do. I am in a new home, and put a small veg garden in this spring. Mostly sandy soil, and I amended as best the budget would allow, and planned to water like heck. But my tomatoes never really did OK. We had such dry heat, even with the water, they looked shrivelled all the time. Grrr....it drove me crazy, what else had I done wrong?? OH yeah, planted near two very well established black walnuts?? Yeah. lol. So now I just need to figure out how far away from these poisoners I need to be next Spring!!! Ah geez, all that work.....

I would go at least half again as much from the edge of the dripline. In other words, if the dripline is 30 feet from the trunk, go 45 feet from the trunk. Roots can be at least that far out (perhaps even more).

tj - thanks. The little flower garden outside of the drip-edge, and on the other side of the fence seems just fine!! I think I may fix it up this fall, for next spring. Thanks for that!!

Plenty of plants grow just fine under BWs, tomatoes, howerver, die if they even see a BW ;-).

Under the BWs I grow Actea, Brunnera, Hosta, Arisaema, Ligularia, Pulminaria, Sweet Cicely, ferns, Euonymus, Solomon's Seal, Huechera, Rudbeckia and daylilies...to name a few. Also some conifers like Tsuga canadensis (hemlocks), Chamaecyparis obtusa (Hinoki False Cypress), Arborvitae and Picea abies (Norway Spruce) do well. Japanese Maples also don't mind the walnuts.
