Heucheras and other 'shade' plants

A poster mentioned on another thread that her heucheras were not doing well. In shade, in a cold zone. Which reminded me that some plants are marketed as being shade plants when they 1) will grow in shade but would really prefer sun or 2) are part of a family that includes plants with differing requirements - some do well in shade but others prefer sun.

Plant marketeers don't always explain this. It seems many people were looking for plants for their shady yards so the "experts" started marketing certain types of plants as shade plants which lead people to believe that all hostas, heucheras, etc. will only grow in shade. Not true. Some do better in shade. Some better in sun.

This is just a caution to say that it pays to do some research before investing your money and time (and precious garden space!). You have to consider sun/shade, soil, moisture, zone when deciding what plants are best suited for your site.

RS - Who has Palace Purple and other heucheras happily growing in full sun.
