Boy, that does seem like a lot for shipping! You could always give a call on it, wouldn't hurt!

I am constantly amazed at the different "shipping and handling" charges for different items, makes you wonder!

I don't order from companies that do that. They are falsely advertising low prices and making it up in shipping costs. They should just charge upfront in the price of the bulbs, and calculate real shipping charges.

I always try to find what I need at a local nursery for this very reason. Unfortunately what I "need" is often not available locally.

Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet if it's something you just have to have and can't find it locally or from other sources.

At least with WFF you can be reasonably certain that your bulbs are good quality, AND that they actually are the bulbs you ordered. (Raise your hand if you've ever ordered pink long-stemmed tulips from some catalogue that came in the mail, tulips that turned out to be orange and stumpy, or some other bulb entirely).
If you order plants and bulbs often enough, you start to develop a group of favorite vendors. For bulbs, I've never been disappointed by Brent & Becky's. It's a family business, and bulbs is pretty much all they do. You might also want to wander over to the Bulbs forum here and compare notes on your experience.

I often make out an on-line order and get to the shipping charge then do not submit the order. Bulbs don't have to get there fast; I think $60 is excessive. I would drive 50 miles to avoid that charge.

This is one of my pet peeves as well. I used to order a great deal of my plants/bulbs and gardening needs through catalogs and online because my rural locations didn't leave me much choice. It seemed through the years though that the shipping charges were getting more and more outragous. It doesn't only happen with nurseries either. The % of shipping charges per order seems particularily aggredious and counter intuitive to me. Like everyone else I had to change my shopping habits and make choices about what I ordered and what I did without. I live in AK now and shipping charges are a serious issue for a state that has to have most things shipped in.
