What's blooming for fall?

I can't believe that my zinnias are still looking so great. The Monarch butterflies were everywhere today. They are really attracted to the zinnias for nectar.

The outstanding perennial right now is the bright yellow swamp sunflower (helianthus angustifolius 'First Light'). The other perennials in full bloom include the salvias: leucantha, mystic spires, indigo spires, pineapple sage and all the greggii colors.

What's blooming in your garden?

Cameron, that garden of yours looks beautiful (as always!). Right now, the only things blooming for me are the Maximilian sunfowers and some burnt-orange mums.

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

I have already posted some of the mums so won't repeat. Right now the grasses are looking good, mums, fall asters and a couple of reblooming iris.

Here the season is almost over....predicted freeze in a few days. I have been letting the annuals dry normally, no deadheading so they aren't looking their best.

The star would have to be the self-seeded petunias around the patio. I just love these flowers and they have looked great all year. They must really like the cooler weather because they have stayed so nice this year.

and the dogwood tree is looking very pretty with its bright red berries:

RE: What's blooming for fall?

Not much these days. I need to take notes in this thread.

I've still got coreopsis full moon, datura, brugmansia, a few echinacea, veronica, knockout roses, helianthus (from Carrie 360), and a few other things, Yvonne's salvia, savlia subrotunda, black and blue salvia, lots o salvias. Next year I have to work on the zinnias. I never cut mine back and they flopped at about 5' tall.

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

I don't do too many annuals but I still have some zinnias, chlome and verbena bonariensis in bloom. Also have grasses, chocolate joe-pye is just coming in, hypericum, toad lily, asters, fairy, carpet and knockout roses, goldenrod, mums, sedums. A random hibiscus just started blooming and the hydrangea paniculatas are still going strong and turning beautiful shades. I also cut back my garden phlox this year and at first was not sure that I was happy about it, but they are nice blooming with the asters.

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

I need to take a picture to show, i have 3 montauk daisies that are HUGE! They are right by my door, took until end of septembe to bloom, they need a new home but i love them right now! i will try to grab a pic in the morning.

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

Carrie gave me two montauk daisies this spring. Only one has bloomed. I think I need to give them more sun. Maybe I'll add them to my "need to move" list.

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

Cameron, is there "ever" a time your garden doesn't look beautiful?

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

My KO's are blooming well as are several of my OGR's particularly Gruss an Aachen...she is pink and covered with blooms. My sedums are all full of blooms as are several of the Speedwells and the salvias. My dogwoods are changing too and covered with berries. The begonias have never looked better than this year since the rains have started. Several other things but I can't think at the moment and it is getting ready to start stormingso can't go out and take pics. c

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

My asters (hybrid) are blooming up a storm!! The natives are doing well, also. The purple mallow I bought this year is still going great guns, but is flopping. Marigolds and pink and white cosmos are still blooming, but they and everything thing else have been hit by frost. The local weather guy used the 'F' word for the long term forecast for next week - that would be 'flurries'. Nooooo, not yet - I must get the hanging baskets in before we go to single digits overnight!!

Nancy.

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

Everything is winding down except the ornamental kale and the asters....I am still getting a cosmos or a zinnia here and there....and I'm holding on to the last few fleeting blooms of summer!

Your house and garden are beautiful!

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

Thanks -- I only show you the "good parts" of the garden! LOL If not for the zinnias, marigolds and salvias, my garden would be all grey and green right now. That's what I noticed last September and tried to change it. The annuals really help.

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

This is the last to bloom here. The rest of the garden is sticks.

RE: What's blooming for fall?

well the rain held off...got as far as Auburn and then decided we didn't need it here in Opelika...5 miles further.

As I look out the window I have OGR's Moonlight, Felicity, Gruss an Aachen ,Cecille Brunner, all in bloom. Pansises and Johnny jump ups, Sweet Olive is AMAZING this year. I have never ever seen the like . Tibouchina is just finishing. Lemon-quat citrus is still blooming and setting fruit. Agastaches are still in bloom. I think that is all...c

Okay. I'm relatively new to this Forum. But, self-seeding petunias in Zone 6, gldno1? I'm salivating.

And, frog and molly, thanks for the BEAUTIFUL Sheffield mum pics to add to my winter dreams/obsessions for next year. May I assume you pinched them a couple times during the summer?

I don't touch mine. Not even water.

RE: What's blooming for fall?

I'm so happy that my pink muhly grass is finally blooming! This photo doesn't do these three justice:

gldno1, what is the name of the petunia you have that returns. I live in z6 as well. I have planted waves, and have never had any return.

RE: What's blooming for fall?

treelover, wonderful pics. I love your combinations of plants.

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

I didn't take any pictures because of rainy weather. What's blooming in
my garden is:

Marigold's- I'm so glad I planted them. Blooming all summer and still
looking great. I received these seeds in a trade, more plants cheaper.
Butterfly Ginger-I can smell their perfume in the air.
Cosmos- Only 1 pink plant, but it still makes a statement.
Pineapple Sage- Always buy small plant in spring. Have not figured out
where the seeds are..Love it.
Stevia- Not all that pretty, but blooming
Nasturtiums-Still blooming

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

Roper, the seeds are where the flowers were. You'll find some brown pouches, less than 1/8" long and wide. Inside, there will be 1 or 2 seeds. I wait until a lot of them have turned brown and strip the entire section. Spread them out to dry on a paper towel. Not all will be viable, so collect lots if you do. The pineapple sage is also very easy to root from cuttings. You can grow it indoors for the winter in a sunny window.

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

Thanks token- I will definately do a cutting. Didn't think of that. I can
put it in my sunroom over winter. I'll also look for the seeds.

Beautiful..I grew up in Southern California. It's so nice there for growing
flowers. I miss not being able to plant citrus trees, and avocados....

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

These are great fall photos! I really shouldn't look -- there's no room for anything else after I finish my seed sowing!

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall? fragrance

Oh... the fragrance in the garden right now is amazing! In bloom:

osmanthus fragrans
white butterfly ginger (has been blooming for a month)
gardenia 'August Beauty'

RE: What's blooming for fall?

My ginger lilies haven't done anything this year. When's the best time to move them?

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

I move my ginger lily in the spring when it starts new growth.

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

Oh I am so envious! You all have such wonderful fall gardens! Delicious.

My gardens got frosted a few weeks ago. :-( It was a little early this year. Now everything is shriveled and brown. The Toad Lilies were frosted after they had been out for only three days. My Eupatorium 'Chocolate' has never bloomed since I bought it five/six years ago. Always nipped by early frosts.

The last things to stay blooming in the garden up to frost were:

Rudbeckia nitida 'Herbstonne'
Aster 'Monch' and an New York Aster
Chrysanthemum (kind of obvious...)
Helenium 'Mardi Gras'- this plant will not stop blooming!
Calendula and Snapdragons
Crocosmia 'George Davison'- which was surprising
Helianthus, double form

I would also like to say the Hypericum 'Albury Purple' is also amazing. The last bloom was in September, but the foliage is still really pretty; it goes through so many subtle color changes during the growing season.

RE: What's blooming for fall?

Oh my goodness, lots of wonderful fall bloomers I don't have. It is always a treat to see Cameron's lovely garden, and CMK's, and the individual pictures are always gorgeous from all of you. Since I live down here in the sub-tropics, I cannot grow a lot of what you northern gardens can so I ooohh and aaahh from my chair.

This is the time of year that gardens do very well here and I'm looking forward to the next 5-6 months of cooler weather to play outside.

Here is some of what is blooming down here right now.

Happy Autumn to all ~ FlowerLady

flowerlady, your photos are gorgeous - as perfect as any professional's! The spiderwort and Philippine violet are simply breathtaking, I have never seen that last one before.

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

-flowerlady, wow! That is beautiful! I especially like that dwarf Poinciana. And the South African Violet looks amazingly like a Foxglove! I have never known of them before.

Thanks for the compliment ;-) Though I suspect you meant someone else on the tread since I didn't post pics. If I did post pics you would all shreek and cover your eyes- it is really a ghastly sight! Lol.

After doing some work in the garden I realized the roses are really in stunning bloom right now, so I grabbed the camera this morning (11/03) and took some shots. The best of them, though, I couldn't photograph: the white Margaret Merrill is 6' tall and at least that much around, full of blooms - but without just the right light, it looks like a bush full of big white blobs, LOL.

Being from the Midwest, it still amazes me that I can have roses almost year-round, and especially around Thanksgiving. The nights are cool but the days are still warm, so my (sadly, few) roses love it. I took some photos this morning and am posting them below.

This is Double Delight, in a wider angle than the photo taken in mid-October above:

This is Double Delight again, with Delany Sisters right next to it:
Double Delight & Delany Sisters roses

This is my Intrigue standard:

This is the Joseph’s Coat climber:

This is a shrub rose, J&P’s Ladies in Waiting. It’s fragrant and quite lovely, but only flops if you try to cut it for the vase:
Ladies in Waiting rose

Here’s a closeup of Delany Sisters:
Double Delight-close up

This is looking alongside the house, back up towards the street. As you can see this is a very narrow bed, just 12" deep! It faces south so the roses are very happy here. That's Intrigue in front with Ladies at its feet, with Delany, then Double Delight furthest away.
Long view roses

Here's a photo of my prized variegated pink dwarf canna. It doesn't bloom very much, but it has managed to survive our three very dry summers with minimal watering, so I count it a success:
Pink Lady canna

And here's my real surprise - the freesias are coming up! The early October rain was hard enough to awaken them, so I've continued to sprinkle them once a week. Looks like I'll have blooms at least a month early this season:

RE: What's blooming for fall?

Pineapple sage is still going strong. I'm going to plant lots more of these red bloomers along the edge of the woods next year. I really like the red beneath all the orange and yellow.

RE: What's blooming for fall?

Thanks, I'm finding more to love about my backyard as time goes on. It's a work in progress. I'm enjoying it. Winter is really hard on it though. I need more evergreens and winter interest. Next year. I'll be focusing more on it than the rest of the yard.

 o
RE: What's blooming for fall?

All these pictures of roses makes me wish I had more. I think they look better in the cool of fall than in June and there are no Japanese Beetles.

Glenda, You should get a Mr Lincoln. Really.

That one was bigger than my fist. And I got big hands.
