daffs and perennial in same spot?

I want a clump of daffodils on either side of my front steps but I want something else (perennial) there for the rest of the season as well. How does one accomplish that?

In most cases, just planting something adjacent to rather than right on top of the bulbs will work fine. A popular combination is daffs and daylilies - the daylily foliage serves to disguise/hide the ripening bulb foliage - but lots of other perennials will work equally as well, even many groundcovers. Because many groundcovers are very shallow rooted, bulbs are able to grow up right through them. Just try and select something that doesn't require lots of summer watering. Most spring flowering bulbs prefer to be kept on the dry side during the summer months.

The above advice is perfect, especially with watering needs. I wanted to add that you should push the bulbs towards the back, don't put them at the front edge. When they're blooming, you'll see them just fine. Then the foliage will get tall and floppy, and your perennial will cover it a lot better if it's in front! A lot of people layer all sorts of different bulbs in one spot. And doing it adjacent to the plant makes eventually moving the plant easier.

imho, the only time co-planting is difficult is when you put the bulbs with annuals. Anything else, just feed them all accordingly. And yes, perennial foliage to cover the dying leaves is a very good thing!

I plant my daffodils among my perennials. I have a very packed front yard with hardly any space so in my case, I actually layer the daffodils over tulips and other spring flowering bulbs. Once that dies out, the nearby alliums and sages are about to bloom. Also the delphiniums are popping out and the astrantias are budding up. I have herbacious perennials planted close to the daffodil/tulip clumps. It's always fun to guess which of the perennials will start popping out next.

The above describes almost perfectly what I do with bulbs. Although I have a large lot, the front garden is the most densely planted with bulbs, perennials, grasses and shrubs. Early spring bulbs pop up first, then mid-Spring, then waves of blooms with assorted perennials after that (and the shrubs and annuals chime in too).

It would be interesting to be able to see what was going on "under the surface" with all the bulbs and roots. And I could avoid what happened yesterday, which was inadvertantly cutting and digging up a litte patch of hyacinths when I was trying to transplant dianthus.
