What can I plant now?

| My little cottage garden is looking pretty sad now that autumn is here. I haven't planted anything new this fall except for some snowdrop bulbs and a cabbage. I've been ripping things out and now have a lot of room to plant things, but I'm wondering if it's far too late in the season to put anything new in. I have a lonely-looking arbor that could use a climbing vine of some sort. Does anyone have suggestions for what to plant in the bare spots of my November garden? |

| Sweet Autumn clematis is a little past blooming now, but could be planted and mulched for next year. Passion vines are still blooming and looking green. Pansies like the cool weather and are very cheerful this time of year. Unlike the vines they will die back in the hot summer, but they look so pretty in the fall. I also have Gerbera daisies that prefer the cool weather and mine are blooming their heads off right now. You probably won't find Gerberas this time of year, but in Spring they're all over the place. | Carolina Jasmine is a good choice for trellises. It's evergreen too. Blooms in February here. Pansies. Pansies. Violas. Pansies. |

If you are considering something permanent so you will always have fall/winter interest (which I think is a very good thing in your area) you might consider: dwarf conifers (I love my little "Christmas tree.") regular and/or dwarf nandina (I love firepower for it's gorgeous fall and winter foliage and the regular nandina for red berries) abelia - I have Edward Goucher and Frances Mason, I think there is a new variegated one? Last year I put a bunch of kale/cabbage and pansies but the kale/cabbage looked better by far all winter I also have hellebores which bloom in winter, you could stick those about. Good luck, Laurie |

| you can plant most perennials you wish to add now, plus tulips and other spring bulbs |

| A word to the wise about Passion vine: I have passiflora incensa, which is one of the only Passion vines that are perennial here, and it's so vigorous that it's almost a nuisance. Plant it in a pot so it doesn't send suckers out, and harvest the fruit so it doesn't spread from seed. |

| Mums that are on sale are a good bet. Plant them out, if they're finished blooming, trim them back by 1/3, and you'll be rewarded with loads of color this time next year. I don't know what part of NW Ark you're in, but there's a great little nursery on Hwy 62 just outside of Garfield between Rodgers and Eureka Springs. It's called Perennials, Etc. and is run by Steve and Sue Davisson. They have a nice selection of unusual, zone specific plants and are just plain fun to visit with. It's worth the trip. Their phone number is 479 359 3412; since it's so late in the season, you might want to call before you go. |
