What's the purple flower?

| I know the goldenrod, and can find some of the grasses, but I don't know what the purple spike is. Can it be some liatris? Is there a native variety?

| Looks like it might be Liatris "Blazing Star". Annette |

| If I have to guess, and I suppose I do, it is liatris. If so, there are are less than invasive types. The yellow is probably not goldenrod, it is more like a yarrow, but not a yarrow. It is wild locally, but will have to check out what it is. Nancy. |

| I'm happy to find out the name of those purple flowers. There were some growing in the roadside weeds near my house and I went and gathered the seeds from one of them. They are really pretty and would look nice in a flower arrangement. So I hope to grow some next year on our side of the road. |

| Thanks everybody. I went searching for native plants to use in my backyard along with my cosmos and others. This was one of the pictures I found. I have liatris, but it's not invasive. It's never even bloomed in two years. |

Yes it looks like my liatris. CH |

| Liatris spicata IS a native plant. And being a native, it is not considered invasive. In its natural environment - open meadows and prairies - it can and does reseed freely. Named forms - plants one would typically find in nurseries and garden centers - tend not to self-sow as freely, but if you were to find some in a native wildflower mix, you could eventually expect a naturalized gathering of them much like the photo, provided you just let them do their thing. |

| So anyone have seeds of liatris spicata? :) |

| You can get seeds here: http://www.wildseedfarms.com/viewitem.php?item=3326 Great place for all kinds of native wildflowers - I'm putting in a meadow garden next year and I'm driving myself crazy trying to limit myself in all the choices here, LOL! Pat |

Wild Seed Farmers is about 50 miles from me. Small world. It is so beautiful, especially in the late sring. It's been a while since I last went there. k |

| That is such a pretty picture. I love the yellow and purple together. A pollinators buffet! I think the yellow flower might be stiff goldenrod - Solidago ridiga. Yet another source for both seeds and many other native wildflowers is Prairie Moon Nursery. |
