Is it too late to plant out mums?

So, my MIL gave me a potted mum for Thanksgiving, in the hopes they would last longer than cut flowers. Do they have any chance surviving outside at this point, if I hardened them off? We've only had a light dusting of snow, and I doubt the ground is anywhere near freezing yet.

Of course, then I wouldn't be able to enjoy them inside the house, and they are very lovely. (Sort of a brick red with yellow centers - very Thanksgiving-y), and if they don't come back, I'll have lost my chance.

Thoughts? I'm in north Lake County, Illinois...
