Seed Flower

I hope it is OK to post here even though I've already posted on the "Name this Plant" forum. I purchased this "seed flower" at a shop in Berea, Kentucky. I can identify the innermost seeds (sesame) and the white squash seeds. The dark seeds are a mystery. They look like watermelon seeds that have been carved. Indeed, the folks at "Name this Plant" believe they are carved. I am just having a hard time believing this since the seeds are so small and since the flower only cost $3 or $4. What do you think? Hand-carved? Is there some other way you could create the carvings?
