Need suggestions for person having surgery

Hi,

I'm new here and thought I would present my question to all of you. I have a friend who is going in for surgery in the next week. It is serious but we think all will be ok. However she will be in the hospital for five days and recovery at home will be up to ten weeks. She will obviously be on the couch most of the time. She would like to learn a craft.

I have many supplies to teach her something, but my brain went dead when she asked if I would teach her something that she could do while lying down.

My craft is clay and she does not have confidence to do that. Plus her hands are arthritic.

I don't want to teach her something stupid and childish but something easy and something to be proud of and something rewarding that she did it herself. Something she would want to repeat.

If I do not have the right supplies I am willing to go and get them. Her interests are zilch. When I asked her what she would like to learn she replied "crafts. So here I am. I really hope I get some good responses. I can't imagine being in bed for ten weeks. Although the thought does enter my mind now and then when I get so tired I need that break. But ten weeks?????? :)

I think beading would be good- just be sure to use the larger beads, not tiny seed beads since she has arthritis.

There's all kinds of books, magazines (my fav is Bead & Button- check out their website for free project ideas), and lots of websites for ideas too.

You can go cheap, with acrylic beads, or expensive with glass beads. Whatever you want.

How about scrapbooking? I don't know her family situation, but maybe putting together a scrapbook as a Christmas gift..like pics of her parents as children...growing up...getting married..having their children and so on. The pics and pages would be larger and easier to manipulate. Another idea would be macrame. Maybe a large holder for a pot this spring. Good Luck!!!

She could make greeting cards, with rubber stamps, or photos cut from magazines. For that matter she could do picture frames or mats with the same idea( rubber stamps or photos from mags) Most scrap book and office supply stores have envelopes and cardstock. She could make cards and give friends and family updates on how she's doing, or just say hello. Tell her to be sure she signs the back so they know it's not a hallmark!!

i was down for 4 weeks .I attempted one stroke painting.I painted or swirled glass bowls etc.Check on gardenjunk to find my lady bug I also did a yellow jacket.I plan to do a black cat later.Since these paints cleanup with water it is interesting to try.She might also like to do fabric painting on a sheet to use later as a shower curtain.I made little vignette to designate all my freinds and family.Does not have to look professional.

I think Beading is a good suggestion. She could learn to make jewelry and also using wire and beads make decorated bottles, candle holders ect and also windchimes and or suncatchers ect.
