Carving basin's into natural stone

meadow_lark

I have been taking rock from a blasting area nearby, and carving "basins" into them for birds and wildlife.

At the moment, I use two kinds of mallets, along with a flat-edge chisel.

As I am learning about what stones carve easily, which ones crack, etc., I find myself frustrated that I can work for quite a while on a piece, only to have it crack when I am close to completion.

If anyone knows of OR finds a site that explains carving techniques and proper tools, I would appreciate it if you would let me know.

Maybe there are tips out there that will help me. For now  itÂs all trial and error.

Thanx so much Meadow Lark
