I've done a fair bit of carving over the years- various forms of soapstone, softer serpentine, some alabaster, and a little marble...and some of the best tools I've ever found were originally meant for wood- the guy in the turning lab would crack a tool, or take the temper off a gouge, and it would wind up in the trash...a #8 or 9 u-gouge is one of the best soft-stone carvers I've ever found...

but over the years, I'd gotten comfortable with power tools. either a fordham brand 'flexible shaft' tool with a rugged carbide cutting bit... or I will admit to doing a fair bit of roughing out concavities with a drill press with either a coring bit (you knock the plug out with hammer and chisel afterwards) or the biggest bullet-head bit I could find.

I know a cat who does the same thing with a router- but he's several kinds of insane, and has way more scars than I do, which is a sign that he's just plain reckless ;)
