RE: Anyone into Wood Carving??

I've been into wood carving since I got my girl scout pocketknife. A good knife is really all you need, but X-acto makes a great wood carving kit that you can get at any craft store. Recently I got a Dremel rotary tool and a huge collection of bits for it. Haven't really figured out how to use everything yet. I've never tried carving birds or tikis, though I have seen some great tikis in Florida carved in palm trees. They uproot the tree and leave the roots on for hair. They were probably carved with a chainsaw. Dover Publishing has an incredible online catalog of craft books, and they're not too expensive, either. Sunset Books may publish one on woodcarving, too.

Hey Tropic,

Just joined and saw you posting.

I am into Realistic Bird Carving.

If you are interested in that kind of carving I can send you names of some good step by step begining books. And some catalog companies that sell all you need to get started. WoodCrafters is a good general catalog but there are a couple of companies that are more specific for Bird Carving...

I would caution you that carving can be addictive...

Hi there;
Concerning the desire to read carving books.....I have many of them, from lots of very accomplished carvers. I think you can find what you need at Amazon.com....a good resource.JUst search for wood carving books there.

Photobucket

Method I use when wood carving: Go to a gift shop and find an item that you would like to make. Take a couple of photos of it, down load the photos to your computer, enlarge the photos to the desired size, use the photos as a pattern, cut out the shape in wood on a band saw. The final shape is formed using sander,and dreml tool.
