chicken wire or 1/4" wire mesh is better- the window screening is rarely just metal any more, and the mesh is so fine that it tends to separate the layers of concrete, rather than hold it together, and the two halfs will tend to delaminate.

I cut out fun shapes from screening, and seal the edges with silicone caulk and sprinkle them with glitter...they make great little ornaments (or stitch two together and fill them with clove buds, then seal)

Ask for hardware cloth..it is a wire mesh that works perfect in stepping stones. You can cut it fairly easy.

I have always used window screening in my stepping stones and have never had any problems with the stones afterwards.

What size stepping stone are you making? I've made many and never used any kind of reinforcement. That's usually for larger things like benches, large pots, etc. If you are making a huge stepping stone, then, yes, use hardware cloth.
