Inside Mosaics

Not sure if this is appropriate for this forum but am learning mosaics [glass on glass]. I find Liquid Nails a little too stiff to work with and wondered if there was something easier to use. Could be my L. Nails is too old?
Does the glued glass help hold the grout or does the grout help hold the glass?
I am thinking of using tacky glue.
