How do I preserve a Christmas tree?

I live in the UK but I'm from the States. When we lived in Maryland, I frequented a certain antiques/eclectica shop. The owner had a real Christmas tree that he saved from year to year in one of those giant Christmas tree bags. As soon as the holiday was over, he would bag up the tree, and store it away until the next year. The tree was wonderfully soft and a nice green color. He said he had preserved it with glycerine?

How does one go about doing that? I'd love to just buy one really nice tree, preserve the softness and the color, and be able to use it year after year!
