Bird's Nest Fern with yellowing leaves and white dots

Hi there,

We've had our Bird's Nest Fern (Asplenium australasicum) for about a year now. Recently, I noticed some of the leaves turning yellow. I have already removed one leaf, but there are others developing the same symptoms.

Also, there are little white dots on all of the leaves.

Below are the photos that show what I'm talking about.

The fern is kept in full shade in the corner of the patio. I water it roughly once a week in summer (that's the season now in Melbourne, Australia). It's planted in the "gritty mix", a potting mix that is very popular over at the Container Gardening forum.

Any ideas on what I can do?

Thanks,
Pete

Are the dots something that can be pulled off or just spots on the leaves? Could be scale insect or mealy bugs, which would explain why the leaves are turning yellow.

Hi there,

The white dots can be easily rubbed off the leaves. They are on both sides of the leaves.

Cheers,
Pete
