My sister got me one of those kits for Christmas. It said on the box not to start the kit until Jan 7th or with 40 days of Jan 7th. I received the kit on Christmas day. It also said to store the kit at 45 degrees or above freezing. I placed it in the refrigerator. I got the kit out last night to start it and the top layer had frost on it. I went ahead and followed the directions. I hope I didnt ruin the kit. I was in a dilema with the temps outside being so cold and I thought placing it in the garage it would get to cold. If I had to do it over again I would of placed the kit in the garage.

Thanks for the update Brandon. I have not grown portabello mushrooms before but I really enjoy fresh home grown mushrooms. I'd be interested to know how long your harvest lasts and the conditions ( water, humidity, temp. etc ... ) that you are keeping them.

I got the mushroom kit for christmas. Its suppose to produce mushrooms for up to 3 monthes. The kit is just a small cardboard box maybe 10x14. Its got the spores in it in one bag and another bag of compost/wood chips. You just mix all the stuff together and and water. The temp requirements are 60-75 degrees in a low light level area. Our first crop was around 8 portabellas that were around 3 in in diameter. Its suppose to produce a new crop every 2 weeks or so. I dont know if the kit it worth the cost of just going out and buying your own mushrooms but this was a gift for christmas. So if ya get one good luck.

Might work because I had a mushroom kit (I am a mushroom expert myself) And it lasted for a year. Not saying all mushroom kits last as long though. There might be a chance, though.
