Encourage Moss to grow on Wood?

I have a lot of woody debris on which I would love to see the native moss growing. Is there something I can do to make the debris more likely to grow moss besides adding moss itself? Is there something I can sprinkle on the wood that will make it a more encouraging environment for moss?

I am in Westchester County, New York.

Is there some way to prevent weeds in this type culture?? I have a lot of trouble with artillery plant and ferns,particularly Boston ferm. Thanks gary
