Asparagus fern is not an actual fern but a flowering plant from The Asparagus genus. The same genus that produces the Asparagus you eat.

My guess without seeing a picture is that you are looking at the flower stalk. It will eventually produce red berries. This plant is easy to propagate by division and seed.

Ah, thank you. My first thought was to snip the little fernlets an inch on either side of where they are growing on the vine and planting them in propagation media as I do ivys, but from what you wrote; shall I take it to mean such would not be a correct procedure for the fern?

The berries will be seed pods then?

I'll bet it's the Asparagus plumosa ...look at close-ups in link. They are root hardy here and vine up trellis yearly but mine have never bloomed even though 10 years old. I've also grown in house in bright light and they do fine. They can be propagated easily by just taking steak knife and slicing through root ball.

Plant Delights has had several Asparagus...one vine I believe hardy to zone 5. I didn't order one but have 2 others,non-vining, I'm enjoying. Lovely easy to grow plants. josh
