Easy Mushrooms

Posted by phantom_white TN (My Page) on

I've always wanted to grow mushrooms, and I've done some research on the topic, but I can't seem to understand what exactly to do. So, I was wondering:

1. What are some of the easier mushrooms to grow.
2. Where is the best place to grow them.
3. What are your favorite kinds.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!

Yeah, I was wondering where the best place to grow them outside was. But info on growing them indoors would be great too. I have googled them...but most of the results I get deal with "Magic" mushrooms, if you get my drift. Maybe I'm not typing in the right thing...

Hi Phantom,

I've been looking into it as well.
Check out these guys
http://mushroompeople.com/
they are really nice people with a wealth of info about mushrooms (and like us they are also from TN so they have actual knowledge on our climate)
They are also part of
http://thefarm.org

If you are close to them they offer ALL kinds of classes. You could actually go learn from them.
hope this helps

Paul Stamets' books are a great place to learn about mushrooms and give instructions on growing the most commonly used species. I was given the entire collection of Stamets' books for Christmas and I have enjoyed all of them immensely. Take a look for used copys because they should not be difficult to find. Fungi perfect is the name of the website of the authors and has lots of info.

This site and this site have pretty cheap methods

I posted a write-up of how to grow shiitake and oyster mushrooms indoors that might be rather helpful and could probably be adapted for outside as well if you had the space. It also explains how to inoculate your own logs (I just don't have the space to do so, or logs), and provides links to places that sell all different types of spores and kits.

So far I'm having pretty good success with oyster (on toilet paper) and shiitake (on a log) inside.
