Can you use vinegar to help grow moss? Why buttermilk anyway?

I would love to be able to grow moss on some of my hypertufa troughs and birdbaths. I have a mossy shade garden already , so the stage is set. I have never had luck with any of the recipies that call for buttermilk.

I also wonder why buttermilk , is it the acidity. Same question for yogart ,,why.

Yesterday i had an idea and decided to try a mixture of moss, water , clay, and I haded a little bit of vinegar to lower the ph.

I am just wondering if any experience moss growers have any thoughts on this .

Thanks , I appreciate all the wonderful feedback on this forum.

Everyone in my family thinks I have gone over the deep in with my love for moss. Hah!
