You may want to try an alternative selection that is more reasonable in price. A fairly new cultivar, Athyrium x 'Branford Beauty' also has red-ish or burgundy stipes and silver-gray foliage. I have 2 of the 'Ursula's Red' that I obtained from Ursula and they have been disappointing. After several years the red-ish colored stipes have almost disappeared and I can't distinguish them from dozens of other Japanese Painted Ferns, which are quite variable in my garden. Check the source below for 'Branford Beauty' and if unsure, contact Drew for a professional opinion. He also has a number of selections that aren't listed on the website and may have 'Ursula's Red' (and at a good price).

I think it was a mutation that was tissue cultured. After a few winters it seems to fade, spore growing of many of these hybrid types is also dissapointing.

there was a great thread on the ferns yahoo mailing list regarding the various Athyrium cultivars... seems more of a marketing scheme than actual differing characteristics.
The two branfords I grow show some promise, the "lady in red" hasn't impressed me much yet, but I've only grown it for 2years.
