Anything else I should do?

I recently planted several divisions of what I think is Boston fern underneath a tree where grass won't grow at all. I don't rake back there, so the dirt is much better from the leaf mold than what the lawn is growing on. I planted about 30 sections of fern about a foot apart and watered them in a little. Most of the ferns look o.k. and some look a little dried out...is there anything else I should do to encourage them? The friend I got them from has a huge bed too full of them (the reason why she was digging them up), which is what I hope to do under the tree to prevent weeds from sprouting...
