Discouraged.....Boston type ferns

I have some ferns that I got from a friend who was thinning her groundcover. I planted something like 30 divisions, making sure the hairlike roots and those bulblike things where in the dirt. They are located in an area under a tree in filtered to complete shade which stays moist 10 months of the year and has a lot of organic matter (There isn't any grass and I have never raked there so a lot of rotted leaves.). They don't look well after a couple of weeks. They are not brown and dry and dead by any means, but I cannot seem to keep a lot of them from falling over...and a few seem to have been stepped on....I guess by cats or some species of rodent at night. There isn't any new growth at all.

I have some asparagus fern that volunteered in the same spot that is fine. I really need something to cover the ground. Do I just wait a while and see if it recovers? I was told it should be very easy.....but it still looks like I screwed up or it's stressed or something.....
