should new growth on sprengeri asparagus 'fern' be cut away?

I inherited a hardy asparagus fern, which I see from other posts is not truly a fern. I really like it, and it has survived in a container under my garage (it gets medium light there)for two winters. I move it to my deck in spring. It is one of the few things that survives on my deck thru summer. Should the new shoots that grow out in the spring be left on the plant or cut away? They tend to be softer than the rest of the plant, and grow really long. I don't mind the appearance, I just wondered if removing them is better for the plant. I have not seen this question addressed in anything I read, and hope some of you can help. Thanks.
