Do you remember what kinds of ferns they were? Some ferns should certainly be up by now, but others get a later start. And of course it's also possible the ones you got aren't hardy in your zone and died over the winter...

Hmmm... One was a Japanese Painted, one I think a Maidenhair, but I cannot remember the third. I did buy them from a nursery that specializes in perennials for our zone.

Sorry for the late response. Maidenhair ferns tend to be a bit late coming up, so I wouldn't worry about them just yet. The Japanese painted ferns I've don't have any experience with, though.

No sign of Athyrium nipponicum 'pictum' in the southern tier.

We have a number of kinds of ferns including Japanese Painted, maidenhair, and a huge long-established patch of Ostrich fern. None are up yet. At least here, spring has been so early and so consistently warm that everything else has been coming up very much earlier than usual -- pretty much jumping out of the ground. But the ferns seem to be sticking stubbornly to their own normal schedule. I wouldn't worry yet.

My Christmas fern, Ostrich ferns, and Japanese ferns are up. The Japanese have about 2" fronds, and Ostrich have about 5" fronds now.

Here in zn 3/4 many ferns are starting. I know nothing about zn 6, but I would think you would see somthing by now.

After work today, there are opening fiddleheads on the tiniest outliers of the long established Osmundas. The older ones are greening up on the crowns. Still nothing on the other species.

Part of the joy of gardening is being thrilled by each new thing coming up, and in holding your breath to see what made it through to come back up. Or so they say..... [sigh] Anxiously waiting for signs of the others.
