moving fern

I have several clumps of fern that need to be moved to a shadier area. Not sure what kind of they are but they look like the generic hardy fern, perhaps a toothed wood fern or leatherwood fern. When is the best time to move them? Do they transplant just like any other perennial, ie dig up a root ball with enough soil and replant? Thanks!

RE: moving fern

That's exactly how you do it! March - May is fern-planting season in my area, although I prefer to transplant closer to March (before the fronds have begun to unfurl, and while the soil is still moist). If you're going from sunny to shady, you shouldn't have any problems at all.
