I had a rash of ferns growing here and every year have to spray weed killer on the area they grow in. They do seem to have the same coiled up appearance and are a nuisance around my vegetable garden. My brother used to pick the heads and cook them.

Most ferns uncoil their fronds in that manner and fiddlehead is common nickname. If you can take a picture of one of the fronds when it is fully open, I'm sure someone can help you identify it.
