Growing Mushrooms

Posted by tomatopotato Massachusetts (My Page) on

Hi I am interested in growing mushrooms (for home cooking and for selling at a local grocer) but I am not sure where to start. I plan to do the growing in the barn in my backyard. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start (advice, books or tutorials)? I tried searching online but all I found were these little gourmet mushroom kits, which probably will not suit my needs. Thanks in advance!

Field and Forest Mushroom has a good catalog (lots of info) and can supply everything you need. I toured their operation last summer. They are very knowledgeable and I think you will find them helpful.

You might want to start with a prepackaged boxed version first. In this way, you get to see what is going on while they start to form and what things are used in the growing medium. I bought a box of these several months ago, and I'm still harvesting nice big white mushrooms. They are slowing down now, but thats Ok, as I got at about 10 pounds of them from the setup already.

RE: Growing Mushrooms

I posted a guide of how to grow shiitake and oyster mushrooms indoors that might be rather helpful and could probably be adapted for outside as well if you had the space. It also explains how to inoculate your own logs (I just don't have the space to do so, or logs), and provides links to places that sell all different types of spores and kits.

So far I'm having pretty good success with oyster (on toilet paper) and shiitake (on a log) inside.
