Asparagus Fern Needs an Overhaul...any advice?

About 8 years ago, I 'inherited' an asparagus fern. I brought it home and set it down along my fence, on top of my lovely bermuda grass (yuck!). I've never done anything with it, because I don't know much about tending to plants. I've just taken an interest, so I'm learning. The fern is fairly large now and has actually grown through the bottom of the redwood planter that it is in. The kicker is, the bermuda grass has grown up through the bottom and is coming out the top. I'm wondering it I can cut the fern back quite a bit (maybe foot long lengths) so it's more managable, then repot it. Then while I'm repotting it, hopefully I can pull all the bermuda grass out of it. How delicate is this plant? Will this kill it?

I've also never re-potted anything so what do I do? Obviously, if the fern is growing through the bottom, it's pretty root bound. Do ferns like to be root bound? Or should I get a larger pot? Any advice is appreciated!
