How to propagate a fern

Posted by acorn922 (My Page) on

I discovered a fern growing in my garden and would like to propagate it
It might be a Hawaiian fern.

I noticed a few branches growing from a root that's been snaking under rocks. (See photo)
Others are growing out of a bark like branch/stem.

Can I just break off a branch and put it in dirt, or should I cut off a chunk of the root?

Thank you!

That thickened stem along the ground isn't actually a root, it's a rhizome, small roots come from it, as well as leaves. Yours looks like a Polypodium species. You should be able to cut off a piece of the rhizome, preferably with roots, and plant that. Keep it moist but not soggy until it establishes itself.
