Dry mail order ferns

I am trying to grow my first ferns in a wooded area in my yard. I ordered a native fern collection which included 6 ferns and I also ordered 1 ostrich ferns. The ostrich fern was green and had some fiddleheads on it, I planted it and its growing great. The rest have come either as what looks like a lump of hardwood, or extremely dry and brittle roots. I have planted:
Royal Fern
Lady Fern
Cinnamon Fern

I planted these as they arrived. In over a month I have seen nothing, no sign of life at all.

I just recieved:
Maidenhair Fern
Chistmas Fern
Spinulose Wood Fern

Before I plant these is there anything I should do to them to wake them up? Perhaps soak them in water over night? Try to pot them in a controlled environment and then transplant them?

I have ideal growing conditions for them, and they will be growing amongst my already growing Astilbe, Hostas, and Lily of the Valley in shade.

Thanks,

Erich

Did you check to see if the grower is reputable?
If so, then lots of ferns can look pretty scraggly when they are dormant. I always soak mine in distilled water to try to wake them up, but it's hard to tell if it works or not.

What I've learned about ferns is that they wake up in their own time, at their own pace, and waiting a month is nothing at all to a fern. Sometimes you have to wait a year. If you're going to be dealing with ferns, then patience is the name of the game.
