Lady fern in container?

Hey all:

I love gardening but I don't think I could ever call myself a fern expert.

I just couldn't resist buying a gorgeous lady fern (Athyrium felix-femina) at my local master gardener's association sale last weekend.

I'm a renter, so am not allowed to plant in ground (even though i'm responsible for yard maintenance).

Anyone have any experience keeping this fern in a container? Do I need to bring it in in the winter, or can i just give it a healthy dose of mulch?

I think you can keep it in a container, certainly. Outside would be preferred if you have a patio/balcony.

Things in a pot are subject to colder temperatures than those in the ground. Could you move the pot to an area that is slightly protected in the winter (up against the building, in an unheated garage)? It might be fine, but I wouldn't want to take a chance the first winter.

i could definitely move it. i've got an unheated north-facing porch if that would work. but was also wondering if a winter position near the outside dryer outlet would work. any ideas?

I think the unheated porch would provide a more consistent atmosphere for it. It's a great fern - comes in a green stemmed form and a red stemmed form.

I take mine inside in the winter. It does just fine in a pot in normal room light and an occasional dose of composted coffee grounds. It is gigantic, beautiful and everyone comments upon it.
