stunted fiddleheads

Has anyone experienced stunted fiddleheads? I have a western sword and an autumn fern (new growth is copper colored) that both produced normal fiddleheads but after unfurling about halfway, they just stopped, leaving half of a leaf. The frond looks normal up to the point the where the tip withered away.
Could it be a drainage problem? Adding to the puzzle is that right next to the stunted sword fern is another sword which opened up perfectly this year.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Michaela
