How to prune an Staghorn fern?

Posted by flora2 7 (My Page) on

I have a friend that got this as a house plant and now it has grown out of control--it is huge. Any suggestions on how to make it smaller and more manageable?

RE: How to prune an Staghorn fern?

Platycerium bifurcatum grows as a "colony" of individual plants. Behind the nest (or shield) fronds is a mass of roots and rhizomes from which the plants send out fronds. You can separate the individual plants (carefully) using a knife to cut through the root mass. The plants can then be remounted taking care not to let the roots dry out. The plant will put out more nest fronds to securely cover the root mass and rhizomes, and the roots will attach to the new mount.
