Anyone growing Pyrrosia piloselloides?

Posted by treehaus 5 (My Page) on

Can Pyrrosia piloselloides be grown indoors? I grow bromeliads and orchids and other plants that require a decent amount of humidity and attention. I would be interested to hear any opinions on this.

I'd never heard of this genus so i looked it up. Quite an interesting fern related to staghorn fern and with tiny reddish hairs. Seems suited to indoor culture if you can keep the humidity up.

Yeah, it is an interesting fern. I hope it proves to be something I can grow indoors. It should at least be a worthwhile experiment.

I take it you can't grow it outdoors there?

I could try to grow it outdoors in the summer, but Pyrrosia piloselloides could not be grown outdoors year round where I live, in zone 5. Other ferns in the Pyrrosia genus are more hardy, Pyrrosia lingua, and Pyrrosia hastata are hardy to about zone 7 or 8 or something like that, but Pyrrosia piloselloides comes from south east Asia (Philippines, Malaysia), and is much less hardy.
