Please help with fern ID

Hello. I received a beautiful antique wire basket/planter from a dear friend and went in search of a fern to grow in it. I wanted something other than the very prevalent Boston fern and the nurseryman pointed me in the direction of a lovely fern I have not grown before. He called it a Maidenhair and instructed me to do some research on the internet to find it's specific care instructions.

Unfortunately, what I'm finding on the internet when I search Maindenhair Fern is not what the same as what I have here in my living room.

My fern is very airy and delicate with shiny black stems and fan-shaped leaves. Can anyone tell me what it is specifically and how to care for it? Will it be alright in my container under the eave of my front porch? There it will get all shade. Also, our climate is quite humid so I guess I won't have to mist?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Grimalkin

Well, your description sound like a maidenhair fern (genus Adiantum). The most common one in cultivation is Adiantum capillus-veneris; a search on that name should turn up some pictures. There are a number of other maidenhair ferns in cultivation as well, though, so it could be one of a number of species. Most of the commonly cultivated species are pretty similar in care to Adiantum capillus-veneris, though. The gist is: don't let the soil dry out, ideally give it some humidity, and bright indirect light or partial sun... a humid climate is definitely good, although it's debatable if misting would provide any benefit if you weren't in a humid climate.
