I purchased a Painted Japanese Fern last summer and planted it out in partial shade. I thought I did a good job of watering it, etc. but in the heat of the summer, it appeared to die off and I wrote it off. About a month ago, I noticed it has come back and is growing really nicely now.

Is it usual to have it disappear and reappear like that? Is it any indication that I've done something wrong with it? Should I move it to full shade? I thought ferns stuck around all year. The Autumn Fern stuck around through most of this winter and then started to look bad, but now it's coming around again and looking good within a months time.
