It's a plant called Squaw Root or Cancer Root (Conopholis americana). It is a parasite on oak trees and doesn't produce leaves or chlorophyll. What you photographed are the flowers.

Ah... Thank you for the information. A quick look around the web shows that I am not alone in mis-identifying this plant as a some type of fungus, the lack of chlorophyll threw me off.
