Well I'd never heard of this one,had to look it up. What a fascinating plant with new plants forming where the leaf touches the soil. Would love a stony bank filled with this!

Old topic, but I was looking for information on when the spores are ready. I have seen this fern in the wild in NC and have once, when given spores, successfully germinated it and given away many babies over the years. Now I would like to start another group of these plants but am not certain when these spores are ready. Anyone out there have an idea? I have successfully grown other ferns from spores, but usually somebody gives me the spores. I seem unable to collect them at the right time.

FYI for anyone interested: I finally collected spores again this past summer and already have some growth from them. Also, apparently some of the old spores showed up in a batch of different ferns. These air borne spores are sneaky, and apparently "hid" in another container. Now I am growing out native Hart's tongue and the walking fern showing up alongside it. Fun to watch.

Update: One of my walking ferns I planted in a hypertufa pot has sent out runners along a nearby log and even put down roots in the leaf covered areas all around. We had more rain this summer than usual, so I imagine that allowed this fern to have enough moisture to spread. I have acidic soil, so I was surprised to see how healthy this clump looks.
