Ok, I aquired a bunch of what I believe are cin. ferns. (I see the brown "stick"). I dug them out with as much soil as possible. One thing I noticed is the "crown", some of these crowns are 3 inches tall! Is this normal? I planted them with this above ground...just like they were growing, but I have never seen such big crowns before. CAn someone explain this characteristic to me? is it normal? will they do ok now that I have transplanted them?

Yes, the crown is very fibrous, I've seen some "mounded" and some not. I think your best bet is to plant them in a similar fashion to how they were growing.

I have found these to be quite hardy. Keep them adequately watered the first year and you should be alright.
