Moss and Ferns -- digging out from under

dhana_devi

Sevral evergreen ferns (don't know what kind -- unidentified end of season special last year) got totally buried about a month ago during some drainage work. After much searching I found one -- it looks pretty dead, leaves are red-clay colored, a reflection of my soil for sure... Same with all the moss that was in the area, although it looks a little greener. I'm finding clumps of it, with tiny reddish sprouts, like roots searching for a foothold.

Does anyone have an opinion on whether the fern is save-able, and if so how? Ditto for moss. My instinct w/the latter is to brush it off gently, press it into the ground, water and hope for the best.

Thanks in advance! Bernadette
