New growth turning brown

I have 4 species on ferns which I planted underneath a sycamore tree in the spring. They get morning sun (2-3 hours worth) and full shade the rest of the day. They are a mother fern, leatherleaf fern, sword fern, and downy ground fern (Hypolepis glandulifera). The mother fern and the sword fern are okay, but the leaves on the other two are turning brown and crispy. What is unusual to me is that it is the newest growth to which this is happening. The mature fronds are just fine, but as the fiddleheads develop and unfurl they turn brown and crunchy. Too much sun? Too much fertilizer (I fertilized once with fish emulsion)? Too much/little water? I'd appreciate ideas.
