1 yr old fern has tripled in size

Hey guys,

I bought a Boston Fern last fall and put it in a pretty planter by my front door. It nearly died over the winter but then a few months ago it came back like crazy. Its basically tripled in size and I have never even fertilized it.

I am betting you will tell me it has outgrown its pot and needs to be divided. I have never divided anything and would rather not. This fern is just a pretty accent by my door. Will it live for several more years if left as is?

It will eventually (sooner rather than later, I would guess) begin to decline. The time frame of this depends upon how much available space there is in that container for NEW root development and growth. It is the newest part of root systems that absorb 02, H20, and minerals...not the old stuff. If roots become too crowded, they cease to grow.

The root system of Boston Ferns is pretty substantial.
