moss in sand? Transplanting question.

I have a lot of moss (I think moss) in one place, some of which I would like to move to another place. I'm not sure what this actual "moss" is, but it grows naturally under bushes here in damp-ish shade, is a light green to golden-green in colour, somewhat ferny/fluffy in appearance if you look at it close up, and an inch or so tall.

The place I want to move it to is between rocks and bricks on a wee patio, in the shade, in my fern garden. Currently, the spaces are filled with sand; in time, these cracks will fill on their own with leaf and needle debris and make a sort of soil, and moss might grow on its own, but I want moss now, now, now, dang it!

Can I transplant this moss directly onto sand, or should I re-fill the cracks and spaces with soil? Is there any good or bad time to transplant moss?
