Liverworts themselves aren't going to cause any harm. Liverworts generally need a lot of water, though, so if they're growing on the soil odds are it was being watered very heavily, doesn't drain well enough, or both.

Replacing nursery soil with something better-draining is necessary in general with bonsai and the nursery people aren't watering it anymore, though, so it's an indication of either a problem you should fix anyways or one that doesn't exist anymore. I wouldn't worry about it.

I water my bonsai every other day. I'll bet liverwort would be great on them to keep the weeds down and to hold moisture in. To me, your plant seems to have had a very nice amount of waterings while living in that nursery.That's a good thing. Barb

I went back to the nursery where the plant was purchased. The manager told me that the stock came from a wholesale nursery that uses soil heavy in fine sand that holds a lot of water so they didn't have to water so often.
Does this make sense to anyone?
I'm just not sure.
I will say that the plant is doing fine after removable of the liverwotrs.

If the plant looks fine and you removed the weed why worry about it. Maybe you should think twice about frequenting that nursery again.The sand thing sure doesn't sound right to me.I try to take the top layer of soil off all plants coming in while repotting them. Barb
