Some are, some aren't. The evergreen ones are: amurensis, bissetiana, championii, cristata, erythrosa, hondoensis, intermedia, marginalis, uniformis. There are a number of others that are semi-evergreen.

In the end it doesn't matter much if you get snow/ice in the winter since the fronds will be flattened to the ground anyway. The fully evergreen christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) is proof of that. PF

so with evergreen ferns or semi-evergreen ferns... do the old fronds perk up and green up more in the spring, or is there just mostly new growth? I'm trying to figure out how they grow... it is hard to believe how they would look good and survive the winter of ice and snow of Ohio...

Most of the evergreen ferns here on Kyushu, of which there are many, have bad looking fronds after one of our winters, and we're in zone 9! Still, we do get freezing or near freezing temperatures and some snow and ice for three months of the year. No fern frond is going to look happy after that. In the spring your ferns will flush nicely, and that is what you must look foward to. The old ones will mostly die back once the new flush is full grown. PF

Someone has previously suggested that ferns that keep their fronds over winter should be called "wintergreen" rather than "evergreen" because it is true, the old fronds are of no decorative value the second year. I cut them off when the new fronds emerge or even before, if it is warming up. They are so ugly by Spring that they actually spoil the best part of fern growing - watching the new ones unfurl. The only purpose served by the old fronds is probably to protect the crown through winter, and to help locate the plant in spring!

Thanks for the info! ... I'll treat my ferns like my Miscanthus grass, good winter interest then cut off last years growth in March
