japanese painted fern not doing well

I don't know why, the hostas are loving it, but the painted ferns don't grow get smaller every year, they have good compost and I think enough water. like I said the hostas and other ferns have took off, garden is in the shade.

Am I missing something? i would love to grow them. I'm going to move them and see if they do any better :(
